     Adirondack power and Light

Amsterdam steam generating station

For nearly 100 years the Amsterdam Steam Generating Station of the Adirondack Power and Light Corporation has stood on the south bank of the Mohawk River opposite the village of Cranesville. The building was clearly the showpiece of Adirondack Power and Light in 1920, and it remains today to impress the viewer in terms of its size and design.

The purpose of this booklet is to provide a tangible record of the building's construction and original appearance as well as a brief account of its early operation. In so doing I hope to preserve for posterity a small testament to what those who lived in the Mohawk Valley during a time of industrial prosperity valued and accomplished.
